The iconic Cartier LOVE bracelet was created as the ultimate symbol of a committed relationship. This unique piece of jewellery is a timeless tribute to love and romance. It consists of two pieces that are bolted together on the wearer's wrist using the special Cartier screwdriver supplied with the bangle.

The concept is you need a partner to put it on for you, marking a lasting sign of your commitment to each other. It isn't meant to be removed, so it's a snug fit and can't be simply slipped off over your hand.

Legendary Italian jewellery designer Aldo Cipullo created the Cartier LOVE bracelet in 1969. It quickly attracted a celebrity clientele as a "must-have" item to show the world the wearer was "locked into love".

The brand's innovative marketing led to Hollywood couples such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton being seen wearing the LOVE bracelet. The public, eager to emulate their icons, rushed to buy one for themselves. The bangle's popularity has increased, with the latest famous wearers including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Cipullo said he had aimed to design a piece of jewellery that couldn't be slipped off easily, symbolising his idea of everlasting love. His oval-shaped bracelet fits snugly around the wrist, with the tiny gold screws being a defining detail.

The LOVE bracelet fulfilled the need for people to have "semi-permanent love symbols" with an "everlasting quality", according to Cipullo. Created in white gold, yellow gold and rose gold, LOVE bracelets also offer options for studded diamonds and gemstones; as well as a choice of thin or thick bands.

Does the LOVE bracelet come in different sizes?

The first thing to note is that there are different types of Cartier LOVE bracelets: the LOVE bracelet regular and the LOVE bracelet small sizes. All versions are available in 18 carat white, yellow or rose gold, with the option of having studded diamonds and gemstones.

The regular Cartier LOVE Bracelets are 6.2 mm wide and 2 mm thick, weighing around 32 grams. The small Cartier LOVE bracelets are 3.65 mm wide - just over half the size of the regular version.

There are several options, including the diamond-studded model with ten brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling 0.21 carats, arranged all around the bangle. There is also the option of a LOVE bracelet with four brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling 0.42 carats. These alternate with the tiny gold screws as part of the bangle's statement design.

The larger pavé diamond LOVE bracelet (width 6.7 mm) is set with 204 round brilliant-cut diamonds totalling two carats. All the bracelets are sold with a screwdriver and fasten in roughly the same way. However, some regular-sized versions don't have a hinge. The bangle is in two parts instead, with screws on either side. The small bangles are in one piece, which is hinged at one side with the screws at the other.

What size LOVE bracelet should I wear?

To determine the size of your LOVE bracelet, the general advice is to measure your wrist and add one centimetre to your size for a snug fit, or two centimetres for a looser fit. However, it must never be so loose that it can slip over your hand.

Both the small and the regular size LOVE bracelets come in seven different wrist sizes, ranging from 15 cm to 21 cm, to fit most people's wrists. Every variation of the LOVE bracelet has the same choice of wrist sizes.

Measure your wrist using either a tape measure, or the official Cartier Wrist Sizer, which you can download and print from Cartier's website.

Print off the wrist sizer on full-size A4 paper and make sure you don't alter the scale. Detailed instructions are available on Cartier's website, but it's very easy to use, as it resembles a wearable tape measure, so you can find out the exact size of your wrist.

How should a Cartier LOVE
bracelet fit?

When working out your size, remember the iconic LOVE bracelet is quite different from other Cartier bracelets and bangles. Once you have measured your wrist, it's up to you how tightly you want it to fit. Some people like a snug fit, while others prefer a slightly looser fit for comfort.

Remember that once it's on, you won't be able to take it off if you're on your own, so don't buy one that is too tight. Whatever fit you choose, as long as it can't actually slip off over your hand, you're wearing the bangle as Cartier intended.

Polls have shown 40.5% of LOVE bracelet wearers prefer a regular or loose fit and 43% like a snug fit. The remainder were undecided, having bought the LOVE bracelet, but later had second thoughts about their choice of size. This is why it's so important to get it right the first time by measuring your wrist properly.
